The University of Utah School of Medicine Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) is comprised of medical and undergraduate students dedicated to helping increase the number of underrepresented students in the health care field as well as helping minority communities improve their overall health.

Over the past four years, the percent of Latino matriculants into the University of Utah School of Medicine has ranged between 3-4% and is much lower than the national average (7.7%). To help alleviate this discrepancy, our group is seeking the financial support of our community so that we can further develop programs that will attract and prepare minority students towards a future health care career.

We believe that students need to be educated and exposed to the different areas of health care. One of the most successful ways we accomplish this is through our annual conference entitled "Navigating Through Health Care Careers: Unlock Your Future." This conference provides an opportunity for underrepresented high school and college students to learn more about careers in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Dentistry, and Public Health. Likewise, we also take numerous Utah undergraduate students to LMSA’s yearly regional conference in California where they get further exposure and mentoring from other numerous medical students and health care professionals.

In addition to these conferences, our group participates in community health fairs where we provide basic health screening, nutrition, exercise and lifestyle advice, as well as referrals to local agencies. This enables us to help our local communities while also allowing us to teach and mentor undergraduate students.

Our impact on both our communities and local students is greatly limited by our scarce funds which are generated through our student fundraising events.
